It has begun.
For my birthday, Bird and Baxter headed west. On a historical quest. Allow me to explain.
As many of you know, I, Baxter, am a historian. Currently I work in the exhibits department for the state historical society. My boyfriend, the above-mentioned Bird, is an engineer who humors my nerdy historical tendencies. Actually, he has nerdy historical tendencies as well, but he hides them better than I do. As a fun weekend activity, he suggested we go around and find historical markers in Oklahoma. I, of course, jumped at this opportunity. What other person would be willing to go on this type of historical treasure hunt with me? I mean, it's one thing to find a few markers, it's a whole other thing to actually seek out historical markers as destinations. He's sounding like a pretty cool guy, huh? I thought so.
The original suggestion involved visiting the markers on his motorcycle, but until some modifications have been made to said motorcycle we will not be taking it on long roadtrips. Soon, soon :-)
I used my new, fun, handy iPhone to find an app that pinpoints historical markers and locations on the National Register of Historic Places throughout the United States, not just in Oklahoma. So, first Oklahoma, then the world! Or, at least the continguous U.S. :-)
Thus we began our sojourn. We've already ended up on several "roads less traveled," including the one pictured above from our first trip on my birthday weekend, and I can't wait to end up on more. And I'll tell you about them, as long as you'll listen. Or rather, read, I suppose. Enjoy!
