I just finished watching Stranger Than Fiction with the illustrious Will Farrell, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Emma Thompson (who I LOVE), and Dustin Hoffman. Besides giving me a strong desire to write my own death sequence or have [insert famous fiction writer's name here] do it for me and wanting Emma Thompson to narrate my mundane daily activities, it was also a very enjoyable and swiftly moving hour and forty-five minutes. Dustin Hoffman rather reminded me of a less kooky version of his Existential Investigator in I *heart* Huckabees, which I need to see again if only for the Dixie Chicks being in my tree and making me happy. Queen Latifah was under-utilized as the assistant to Emma Thompson's author--they could have chosen someone with a less powerful personality to play that role, although it's always fun to see her. As I've grown weary of Will Farrell's general type of movie, this was great to see because I actually like Will Farrell, just not his movies. Does that make any sense at all?
Anyway, the thought of an author writing the story of my life in a completely different place while it's happening to me moment by moment is really fascinating. Of course, my life is so boring and doesn't have the quirky twists and turns that would sell a novel, but even so, it's fun to imagine. Of course, the reverse--having that control over someone else's life--is incredibly frightening. What if my pen (or typewriter, or computer) held someone's future? Yes kiddies, we have visions of alternate universes dancing in our heads.
Anyway, great movie. Watch it. Or I'll start writing stories in which you do.
